Despite 2011 showing record numbers of tourists and hotel occupancy the union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) said that some 30 hotels are planning to close over the winter months, reducing available beds on the coast by 40%.
Some hotels close every winter due to low occupancy but some are planning to close for the first time. Hotel Alay in Benalmadena and Marbella’s exclusive Villa Padierna Hotel will both close, claiming the closure is for “reforms” and not because of seasonal drops in tourism. Villa Padierna will be closed from December 11 to March 15.
Tourism numbers reached record levels this year and, by the end of April, 65% of rooms in Marbella’s 5-star hotels were already booked for June.
Ignacio Acirre owns the 4-star Hotel Alay in Benalmadena which will be closed until February. Talking to the Euro Weekly News he said “The last time we carried out reforms was 2003, so since occupation and prices are half that of summer, we decided to take advantage of this down time for renovations,”.
Meanwhile, Malaga City’s only 5-star hotel, the Vincci Selección Posada del Patio, confirmed it will remain open throughout the winter.
